Paisley Samuel attends “Sample to Genome Course” at the Sanger Institute

As part of the Aquatic Symbiosis Genome Project, the Wellcome Sanger Institute has been generously providing training workshops in genomics and bioinformatics to early career researchers. The latest was the “Sample to Genome Course” at Hinxton Hall, from 6th-12th October 2024. The course introduced and revealed the details from the Darwin Tree of Life genome production pipeline, from genome extractions to sequencing data analysis. As part of the course, NSU Marine Microbiology Laboratory manager and grad student, Paisley Samuel, traveled from Fort Lauderdale Florida to join 22 other participants from around the world. Besides laboratory bench and computational exercises intended to show the process from specimen to whole genome sequences, the group also visited the WSI’s Scientific Operation, where sequencing data are produced, and the Sanger Data Centre. Student participants learned cutting edge applicable skills for their genomics research. The course also offered an opportunity for early career researchers in the field to meet each other offline. The Global Invertebrate Genome Alliance will showcase some of the tools and skills in upcoming monthly online lectures.
