It is graduation season again, and a time of great joy for students and their families. We had a few students in the MMG Lab cross over this year (e.g. Pari Cribbins, Kennedie Cockrell), or at least attend commencement. Another enjoyable aspect of commencements (8 total NSU events) was having visits and hearing inspirational speeches from distinguished guests. This included the Dr. Guy Harvey, the Guy Harvey Oceanographic Center namesake, as well as “Her Deepness”, Dr. Sylvia Earl, a larger than life icon in deep sea diving, and marine biodiversity conservation. NSU students, including this year’s Grand Marshal Lopez were thrilled to meet the scientists. Dr. Harvey elaborated on various experiences which brought him to focus on shark research and his artistry. While at 90 years young, Dr. Earle told us that she had been on 30 different kinds of submersibles through her career, including her record setting descent single woman dive to 381 meters. Her work also encompasses the formation of non-profits such as Mission Blue and its “Hope Spots”. Read more about Dr. Earle’s career here – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sylvia_Earle
